There is a small amount of violence and the love interest has dealt with abuse from his stepfather (not a spoiler, this comes up early on) for years but aside from that, the actual plot isn't really dark at all. It's actually somewhat lighthearted with a lot of humorous interactions: tons of bickering and teasing and joking. I'd say this book is 75% fantasy and only 25% romance - main character and love interest are friends for the vast majority of the book with some light pining. (less)
