In all seriousness, there are quite a few books off there that either attempt to rewrite P&P in a modern light or continue the story beyond the ending of the original P&P. You generally don't need to read the original before starting on the rewrites, though it does help to pick up some of the nuance that would otherwise be missed. I think it just makes the stories that much more enjoyable if you already have a P&P foundation to build on.(less)
