Things like rating and other metadata on the site might also take time to recalibrate and show the correct average for. It's usually not immediate, though I do not know how long it'd take. Some things update more quickly that other things. (less)

This is something that's been asked/complained/pointed out/etc constantly on GR. People using the star-rating for various reasons. Some to express interest or excitement (or lack of) in a book. Some love the author and their works and so assume/know they will love the book and rate it as such. Putting it on a shelf like "really-want-to-read" would make more sense, but some for whatever reasons, end up putting it as a 5-star instead. When looking at one's shelf, you can sort by star ratings and many might use that as a sort of TBR list. I've known people that do this. I only rate a book if I've read a book and I use shelves for everything else. But many don't do that. Some rate by accident, but don't realize it or know how to undo it. Some people have ARCs and so have read the book early and can rate it based off their reading. Either way, it's not against any rules for people to rate books, unpublished ones included. Once the book is out and people read it, the rating will change. (less)
