The way I looked at this was strictly from the time period - 1940. When I was writing the story, I thought of Loretta Lynn, who married "Doo" at fifteen. Of course, in the end of this story, Wallis Ann isn't getting married, but the story does imply a future for her and Joe at some point - but that could be much later.
