Ann: How did you research all this? It seemed like you were on a Yucatan dig site for months, with all you knew about this lifestyle and the Mayans!

Ann Charles Kim, I buried my head in research books while writing the story. Books about Maya history, language, food, glyphs, and religion/beliefs. I also studie…moreKim, I buried my head in research books while writing the story. Books about Maya history, language, food, glyphs, and religion/beliefs. I also studied other ancient Mesoamerican cultures and read up on current archaeology practices and daily life at a dig site. I studied the areas physical geography and boned up on structural terminology since many scenes would take place inside of temples at the dig site. I researched flora and fauna, watching videos about both and listening to the sounds the animals make. It took a lot of work, but I really wanted my readers to feel like they were down at a dig site. I wanted to share some of the fascinating information that has been learned about the ancient Maya in a way that was fun and interesting even if you aren’t really into archaeology and history.
