So when her master entered the state he legally could not keep her enslaved there if she wanted to be free. Pennsylvania had a law that said those who were enslaved were legally free if they resided in the state for 6 months. Often times, freedom seekers arrived without masters and abolitionists were vigilant in helping them go further north if they wanted to. All freedom seekers had to contend with slave catchers, however. (less)
