Does the author want readers to believe in God, not believe in God, or make their own decision? While I don't believe that is the premise of the book, I do think it would make some of my students consider that question.

I've never gone to a Catholic school, but I did go to a private Christian high-school, and while my experiences were similar to those described in the book, I can't say that every school across the world would give you, specifically, a similar experience.
