Why does everyone feel compelled to tell the whole story instead of just reviewing the merits of the book?

I'm at 40% read. Does it get better? 'Cause I'm not getting the attraction. What am I missing? The dialogue is forced, the plot is going nowhere, and I don't care about the characters to turn to the next page.

Love most Demille books, but this one not so much. About 55% in and will struggle to finish it. Know more about Cuba then I really ever wanted to know! It's like a travelog of places I really don't want to visit. Taking a long time to get to the drama of the book. Has anyone found it this disappointing?

Lilli I keep asking myself whether it is the same author. It is so TOTALLY out of character! Ghostwriter cashing in?

Is this really the same author?The one that wrote all the books I could not put down? A book that I picked up about five times to try it again and every time yawning and putting it away again?

Here is Nelson DeMille's exciting new book about a smart-alecky U.S. military veteran who goes to a Communist country that is starting to open up, is on a secret mission, deals with a vindictive official, and falls in love with a beautiful woman who is keeping secrets. Yes, folks, it's Up Country and you will really ... what? Look at the front cover? Oh, hey, this book is called The Cuban Affair. My bad.

Is there a way for somebody to privately tell me how the book ended? I was about 90% done and accidentally returned it to my library - they were still in Cuba. I put myself back on the wait-list, but since I only thought the book was so-so I really just need to know what happened to Mac, Sara, Jack, the boat and the cargo. I loved all the Cuban history, but Cuba is a place I'd love to visit.

Suspense is the key to a good story?
