How the heck does hearing voices have anything to do with Autism? My goodness....is the author thinking of Schizophrenia? Auditory hallucinations are occasionally a symptom of that.....

The reference to Autism was strictly about Gabriel withdrawing into himself as a result of paying attention to the voices and being afraid of the voices. No one that was observing him knew he was hearing voices and he never spoke to anyone about hearing voices, so no one but Gabriel knew. Also, he was not specifically diagnosed, there were simply mentions in his file that he might be exhibiting some patterns of behavior that could be construed as Autistic in nature.
