I had seen the American movie version of Talented Mr Ripley about a dozen times, so I skipped that and went into book 2. Had a blast, didn't feel lost, I really like this series. Finished book 3 soon after that. Not many characters from book 2 carry over into book 3. There are characters and situations from book 2 that are referenced in passing, so that could cause some very minor confusion. But the main thrust of this book is the ghoulishly intimate relationship between Ripley and Jonathan. I also think it's slightly better than book 2, though again, I liked them both.(less)
