When Vercingetorix arrives on scene, I was immediately struck with the sense that we had been introduced to this character -- or one with a very similar name -- I'm convinced this was a name given to a baby by its mother (a Roman's Gallic mistress?) in a previous book, though I am unable to find any information that would corroborate this memory. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? Or an unrelated work?

In previous books there was Gaius Marius and Sulla who had sired children from Germanic women. And I think there was one reference to Sulla's child in this book. I'd have to reread Caesar to find the reference.(less)
