My Book Club has never tackled a Hardy - shameful! Many of us have read several of his books as our own choice, but one member is actively anti-Hardy. Would this would be a good option - one that not many have read and that could persuade the naysayer? Please advise

It really depends on why your naysayer is anti-Hardy - are they anti-gloom? - then perhaps "Far from the madding crowd" where at least it all comes reasonably right in the end. If you look in Wikipedia it lists his novels under Romance/Fantasy or Character/Environment or Ingenuity - you should be able to avoid any prejudice by choosing that way.(less)
