How gory is the dark parts of this manga? I think the plot is interesting and it sounds suspenseful, and I can take words regarding the horror, just not too descriptive nor any pictures of the gory stuff. I'm 26 but I'm ultra sensitive to that kind of thing! Please let me know, since otherwise this looks like an entertaining read! (I'm new to manga!)

Especially beginning in Volume 5, the violence becomes strongly R-rated. Plus, several characters along the way have disturbing deformities with disturbing, violent backstories that are revealed.

It's not for every kid, it definitely is gory, but they get so much violence from other shows and games and manga too. The story is one of hope and perseverance despite the gory and terrible odds.
A blanket statement that this isn't for middle-grade kids at all is incorrect.
7th/8th grade is who I would start to recommend it to, but I wouldn't stop a kid who wants to read it from checking it out. (less)
