I'm always wary of things about autistic people written by allistic people. Can any autistic folks who've read this give thoughts on how well (or not-well) that aspect was handled? Such as, was Ginny needlessly infantilized, sensationalized, etc? Was she a well-rounded character, or is this just another brand of inspiration porn for allistics? I dearly want more autistic heroes/heroines in books that are handled well.

Ginny was the victim of neglect and failure to thrive. Though Mr. Ludwig doesn't directly say it, I think Ginny was sexually abused as well as emotionally and physically abused. She was isolated and had little to no socialization in her formative years. So it was like she was just starting her life at 14. She wasn't ready to be treated as an independent 14 year old.

I think this also answers your question of her character being well rounded. She's not. Even she knows that (-ginny). But it's not because She's autistic, it's because of the abuse she suffered through.(less)

I would put Ginny Moon in the same boat as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It is about an autistic teen girl who is trying to work through childhood trauma, and is really struggling. It explores themes of abuse and neglect.

Bottom line: it depends on the teen. (less)

I read the kindle edition from the library (Overdrive) Starting at the cover and paging through all the beginning info it took me straight to page 138 (or somewhere around there). It wasn't until I finished and was reading the reviews that I realized I missed almost the whole first third of the book. (Although, after going back and reading it, it didn't make a huge difference.) Anyone else have this problem?
