Oh, yes it is translated into English (May 2018) and Ive just finished it, In English: I am from Denamrk and despite what some think Swedish and Danish people just cannot talk (or read) one anothers language. There are many BIG differences. Aside from that, I'd say that "I am Behind You" is a good book. I've read 4 of Lindqvist's novel so far - and id have to say this one I liked the LEAST. Keep in mind, it is not mediocre or bad novel - it is just not up to par with "Le the right one in" or "Hadling of the Undead". It is a bit too "weird" and few of the charaters are really that likeable. These people are just regular capers, whose whole world is just GONE one morning, Replaced by an empty wasteland. They go from disbelief to depression (partly because of old regrets) to going (half)-grazy with this bizarre and dangerous situation. A bit too much time is spend learning that there is nothing outthere. That being said, the novel gets better after about 150 pages or so. But that is just a biiit TOO long in my opinion.
I get that one the themes are to tell of ordinary people, complete with traumatic pasts, regrets, failures and fears and so on. And that is done well.
Another theme is that an extremely stressful and bewildering situation, will bring out the worst in (some) people. Although well-written and with some real character growth and few twists. I imagine that soem
readers will find "I am behind you" a bit too dull, and some might give up, when halfway through, as the reader (like the characters) are still no closer to finding out "wtf" is going on?!
But like I mentioned, if you really like the authors style and you can get invested in the characters' humanity and appreciate the theme that dissappointment, trauma and failure is part of being human - and get with the book's message: there is no running from yourself or your past. Make peace with yourself and your past, and accept YOU for who you are, then there's some really realistic and believable backstory for each character here. Plus a number of surprising twists!
It is also a story about lonelines and sadness, but also about human ability to and to overcome seemingly impossible odds.
Out of 5 stars. I'll give it 3- (less)
