Did anyone else have a hard time with the authenticity of the voice in this novel? I'm not necessarily saying "white people can never write POC narrators", but this narrator really didn't feel like a poor, Congolese-Kenyan girl facing colorism to me. She was surprisingly casual about things. Plus, a dude locked her in the basement and she was still swooning over him? I DNF'ed, but does it get better?
