I am a little more that halfway through this book, which I have found to be both fascinating and disturbing. However, the more I read the more I become skeptical as to the factual nature of much of what is being written. This skepticism is now putting the entire work in doubt. Has this book ever received scrutiny from those who might know how true it is?

I can verify that the labor camps, the jails, the mistreatment of gays, writers, artists, dissidents is true. The neighbors snitching on one another and the paranoia, also all true. My paternal grandfather was jailed for political dissidence. My father came over on his own with his brother as a small child through the Catholic ministries. My cousins came through Mariel boat lift. There are documentaries that can help you understand the history and continuing misery of the island's inhabitants.(less)
