This novel focuses more on the second half of the original legend, the fratricide, attempted murder, plague etc etc.

High school level is when the Theban trilogy is usually suggested as recommended reading to students. Even then, it is usually the paraphrase of the legend, not the plays themselves that are prescribed, as at a younger age, children might not understand enough, or have nightmares about some parts.
