In fact, the Vice President of the US, Mike Pence, fully embraces and encourages these camps as a way to rid "sinful men and women" of their homosexual thoughts and deeds. Those are HIS words, not mine. He and his wife financially supported such a place when he was Governor of Indiana and their churches that they attend still do. These are nothing short of torture, people die and/or have committed suicide often at these camps and the government - state and federal are aware of this. They should be outlawed but they are protected under the misguided belief that the constitution protects religion and that somehow this vile and horrific practice is "religious." (less)

I just watched the trailer and am kinda terrified to read this book. The trailer hurt my heart. I can't imagine how reading it might feel, I am afraid my heart won't cope. But, at the same time, I wanna read- you get?

I think it's an important book but I, and others in my book group, thought the book was kind of flat, even boring, didn't really convey what was happening in the program or how it affected the participants.
After I read the book I saw the movie. From beginning to end it was more powerful emotionally. As always, the movie omitted some incidents that were in the book, and I thought that was OK. (Sometimes it's not.) There was one incident in the movie that was sexually explicit, and far more disturbing than in the book. The movie also continued beyond the end of the book, which I appreciated.(less)
