I interpreted this as he was the lost Roman scout mentioned by Ferox
*This is based on his history, he was found
in odd circumstances " 'We discovered him on a field trip in Rotherweird Westwood... primitive clothes, no money or papers, not even a name except Gorius..."
*Gorius/Gregorius are from the Latin meaning 'the watcher' (watcher=scout?)
* He's very athletic and disciplined which suggests a military background
*He has far more Latin than he lets on
*He treats Ferox's skull to a respectful Roman send-off
Pages 317-318 would seem to confirm this, where Jones recalls memories he's tried to repress.
