Susan Presumably. All those hours that Florence is lying on the floor remembering significant events from her life, she is also hoping that someone will fin…morePresumably. All those hours that Florence is lying on the floor remembering significant events from her life, she is also hoping that someone will find her and take her to the hospital. She imagines who will find her, what the person will say to her, and that she will be fine once the ambulance comes. But then when Simon finally comes to Florence's flat and triggers the security lights from outside, Florence is able to see the jet brooch under the sideboard. She believes Elsie must have bought it for her in Whitby and that it's the sort of thing you buy someone you love. She therefore yells that she's fine to Simon, a sign that she would rather die than be rescued. I think she imagines that if she lets go and dies, she can be reunited with Elsie, the one person she's really loved, in the afterlife.(less)
