Does anyone else have a problem with an 11 year old child, one supposed to be brilliant in most things scientific, believing in Santa? Not to be a grinch, but that seems far too old even for children less precocious than Flavia.

While she may seem isolated at Buckshaw, she presumably goes to school and interacts with other 11-year olds. Believing in Santa in sixth grade would result in ridicule at any junior high. At the very least, her logic would be questioned.

Also she understands the intricacies of pregnancy but not how babies are made and born? Surely by now she would’ve stumbled across an anatomy or biology book and read about it. (less)
