Orla's murder isn't unsolved, but Jack isn't Mahony's father. The author was very careful to place two pieces of information quite close (Mahony's eyes were turning brown, "like hers and his daddy's"; and, that Jack had blue eyes). I was hoping someone had figured this out! (less)

If a 13yo chose it, and got past the first page, I wouldn't stop them from reading it, but I would want to make sure that kid had good lines of communication with a trusted adult, me or someone else.(less)

They had an embarrassing moment and he was kind enough to just "let's just forget about it" and go back to being friends and then Shauna sets her mind that 'he is her man' and she has to go find him in the storm and for that he is grateful? Grateful enough to be her boyfriend? Knowing full well that she wants stability, marriage, and children? Or, she is going to give those things up, knowing full well he can't give them to her? I agree: it wasn't plausible.(less)

If the other things Annie says are true, Orla's mother was an alcoholic who believed Orla was not her daughter but a changeling left by the devil, that she caused accidents and illnesses in the family, caused birds and even mice to avoid their cottage, and even caused the roses in the garden to change color. And the mother kept her child locked in a windowless room.

Based on this insanity, I'm disinclined to believe anything Orla's mother (or Annie Farelly) said. I wonder if the mother caught Orla's father letting her out of the room and being kind to her, so she accused him of having an incestuous relationship and threatened to tell everyone about it, causing him to run away for fear of being prosecuted. But that's just speculation on my part. We never hear Orla or her father's side of the story.(less)
