In the scene of the small room and the bed of four people, there was a woman speaking to a man and the other two men were sleeping.When the woman started the talk, the writer said about him that 'He looks about him'. I am not sure about the meaning of 'looks about'. Also I don't know who was the person that 'him' referred to because he was listening to female and the context doesn't give a clear meaning. Help?

So the word 'him' here refers to Jasper himself. 'Looks about' seems to have a broad sense in Victorian era grammar, since Herbert Pocket of Dickens's "Great Expectations" also says it all the time, and for him it means "looking for a job".(less)
