And I hope this means you liked and not that you felt the ending was too unresolved. I personally hate it when I get to the end of books and realize it's not really an ending at all and the author is just trying to trick me into reading the next book. I tried not to do that.(less)

Servants lived very close to their employers and knew a lot about them, even as at the same time there was a vast gulf of class and wealth, etc. This has always struck me as full of potential for psychological weirdness. There were cases of servants spying on their masters and either blackmailing them or selling this information to an interested buyer (for instance in cases of suspected adultery, a servant might be hired by the husband to spy on the wife). Or you would also servants identifying with their masters, just as they wore their cast-off clothes (which was a thing that happened). I think Jencks was by disposition a snoop, a misogynist, and had a bit of a man-crush on Liam, which he sensed was not returned. Whether this interest was consciously sexual, as Rachel suspected, is something beyond the scope of the story. But there was a bit of jealousy/dislike of Rachel there, along with general snoopiness, never knowing when you might learn something useful, prompting his behavior.(less)
