Many countries treat the basic pairing instinct "legally" if two people have lived together under a roof as a de facto relationship.

In NZ and British law that I am familiar with, people in a de facto relationship have the same responsibilities and rights as in a marriage, whether a religious or civil one.

India does not have a Uniform Civil Code. They have the Hindu Marriages Act, Muslim Personal Law, Christian Personal Law and Sikh marriage.

Muslim law where triple talaq by SMS is legal, Christian law which does not distinguish between Roman Catholic Canonical proscription on divorce and the Anglican Church's acknowledgement of a way out, all add to the "institution" called marriage in India. And each State has their own set of laws to add to the pot pourri of complexity that arranged marriages, caste distinctions bring to this relationship.

Smart Indians have been going to Goa to register their weddings for many years, the only State in India which has an UCC.

Marriage is spiritual, constrained by the two individuals involved, or in the case of Muslims in India perhaps five.
