Verne himself acknowledged these errors. The short answer is: he messed up. He himself wished he had set Captain Grant’s Children and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea some 10 years before he actually did, because the only novel of the three that actually needed a set time-frame is The Mysterious Island (because of the Civil War setting), which is, unfortunately for Verne, the last one that was written.
Verne and his publisher tried to “fix” this problem by adding a footnote in the first editions of TMI stating that the book was a sequel of the other two and that the dates did not add, but because he could not give the “real dates” the first time, the reader should just go along with these new dates, scratching the previous ones.(less)
