Do you need to read the Extraordinary voyages books in the order they came out ? Or are they standalones

I would personally suggest starting with his first few books like Five Weeks in a Balloon, Adventures of Captain Hatteras, Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Paris in the Twentieth Century (though the last one may be harder to find) to get a feel for this writer's style, I've read all of these so far and enjoyed them.(less)

So I just finnished this book with my reading club, and we found something really strange. Two of us had versions where the main charachters names where Von Hardwigg and Harry. Others had the versions where the names were Lidenbrock (the proffesor and uncle) and Axel. This difference baffled us quite a bit, since could see no reason to change names, even when translating the book. Anyone know anything about this?
