I'm not sure that it matters the gender or race of the author. In fact, one of his other books was also written from a female perspective, and the storyline was basically about her journey through an arranged marriage and the abuse that followed. It was an incredible book that I read without realizing the author was male. I was shocked when I found out, but thoroughly impressed with his insight. It encouraged me to pick this one up, and I'm glad I did. (less)

It's YA and an historical fiction novel about Molokai and the leper colony. All my students who read it, enjoy it.(less)
