This book does refer to the events of the first book quite a bit, but the story itself is standalone, the characters and concept are introduced clearly enough, and the narrative does a decent enough job of bringing you up to speed.

I'd say you'll be able to understand this book just fine without having read the first one, even if a couple of details and callbacks might make a little more sense if you have. (less)
