The contrasts give a better feeling for the history of Italy, and even all of Europe. The Medici family was so tied to the governance of not just Florence, but the Vatican/Rome. How Michelangelo chose what to sculpt also it very connected to the patronage-of-arts system, and to his patrons' fortunes.(less)
