I ch…moreI agree that it may be a flashback back to when he was 9 yrs old. That time, she didn't return because she was drugged and held against her will. I choose to believe that she comes back at the end, and a good guess is that she went to church or maybe a meeting for recovering addicts, since she is now clean.(less)
