I am looking for a translation of the first writings of the Buddha's story. From my understanding, it was several hundred years after he lived that his story was written. I am seeking the oldest writings about his life. Any suggestions?

I knew a man (WG West) who found the WW2 radio broadcasts of George Orwell in a library in Delhi -- resulting in two great books. Another British author who makes good use of Indian researchers, and libraries, is William Dalrymple. Good luck.(less)
