There are some homages, an easy-to-miss spoiler for the ending of the first book, and a few cameos to the first book in the second. But the major plot points in the second book aren't deeply connected to characters introduced by its predecessor.

It's the setting that would lose some of its appeal by reading the second book first. Still, that is easily summed up with a few lines of character dialogue early within both books. Read whatever synopsis interests you more is what I say. (less)
