Writing this for anyone viewing your question, because I figure you already finished/abandoned it.
It’s twisty throughout the last quarter of the book (from the Third Contact section on). If one fast-forwards to Chapter 45, one might catch on to what one missed in between. But the whole point of reading a story like this, with alternating POV (hence the book title!), is to experience the slow build to the twists and turns — not to plow through it to get to one at the end. ;)(less)

She can't be Beth cuz Beth is home with Laura's babies.

The reason, I believe, this is used as a prelude (undated) is so that the reader thinks it's Beth at the first trial. The reader doesn't expect that there will be a second trial.(less)
