How enjoyable is it to read? I don't have the patience to read scholarly tomes written in dry academic prose. Praiseworthy comments that overlook this aspect of an otherwise meritorious book leave me wondering.

Bob The book is not overly academic and has a relatively lively writing style. It is definitely not a popular history.
