I understand this is the 1st book in the New Tales of the Vampires, but is it necessary to read The Vampire Chronicles series first?

I think it's kind of crazy that they put it at the start of The Vampire Chronicles bundle. I read a few chapters before (thankfully) giving up and 'skipping' straight to the first one, Interview With The Vampire. I've just now 'skipped' back as I'm reading them in written chronological order, and I'm very very glad I did - I'd recommend to other new readers to the series to do the same.(less)
