Many more paragraphs are devoted to Esther's enthusiastic expressions of tender love and affection for Ada than are to her supposed love for Woodcourt, the man she eventually marries. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find any expressions of affection towards him at all. Esther's musings about Woodcourt seem, at least to me, mostly objective in nature. Her admiration for Ada, on the other hand, was so over done that I found myself thinking "oh for goodness sake, get a room."(less)

The BBC mini series (2005), writes' Esther Summerson', as less of a door mat and more realistic, than her creator . I'm sorry, the written version comes across as whiny and far too accepting of her lot. As a modern reader , the written' Esther Summerson', makes my teeth ache! How would you describe John Jarndyce in the mini series and the novel?

Assuming that John Jarndyce is at least a jolly performance as he is in the book, so much of his character depends on how he hands off Esther to be married to someone else in the last few chapters. Still scratching my head over how she should have responded to this sudden switch.(less)
