Personally, I would say that for a basic enjoyment it’s enough to remember that this is a satire (not always an easy task) and know that England was exploiting Ireland (also a bit sense for a black humour is needed). For a bit deeper understanding, I actually think that the Wikipedia page is a good start (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Modes...).
