It's the baseline or starting point for the story in The Good German, which has lots of imbedded references to The Ash Garden. I see these two novels as the mirror image of the other. The Ash Garden charts the lives of three characters who live in the shadow of the "true" history--Hiroshima--and The Good German explores that alternate possibility of the war going in a different direction.
