I’d actually never heard of The Last Five Years until last weekend when a friend mentioned it, and I promptly watched it on Netflix! (And I understand that it is based on a play after doing some googling.) After seeing it, I think that though some of the initial constructs are the same , the book is very different. And I think that they stand separately, each as their own entity. Hope that answers your question!(less)
