Why do authors write serial cliffhangers with abrupt endings? It only seems to alienate would be readers.

A story should end by the end of the book. You are cheating your readers if you expect them to buy more than one book to finish your story. There is a difference between a trilogy and a serial and serials should only happen on television.(less)
