Lifelong habits die hard, but simultaneously she was getting sick of both Aiden and Will sauntering in when they felt like it. Someone as insecure as she is would surely lock all doors, even change the locks. But she seemed to suffer from inertia on many levels. Her ever rising debt could have been addressed 3 years earlier by letting out the cottage and getting a job, but she "couldn't bear" to do either. Not a very responsible or adult attitude, but essential to the successful progress of Haynes' plot. If she had been more sensible, there would have been no remaining story at all! So let Haynes mould her own characters, warts and all. She knows what she is doing and keeps proving it. (less)
