MEANING #1: Our resident anti-hero/nemesis/main-character (depending on reader POV) Chloe Armitage has the opening scene in the book (post prologue) where she states (regarding her lord & master, Cornelius Crane) her need and her hope, "You have bound me with magic so that I can never harm you, but for all your genius, knowledge, and wisdom, you fail to see that the binding may have a loophole -"

Later she makes the following statement, "... Crane will be distracted and off-balance, he will not see the subtle agency of my plan."

There is a loophole in the magic of her binding, and she is attempting to exploit it - her plan is subtle, secret, and elliptical in its form.

The key question is - will Chloe's subtle plan succeed or fail? Will she acquire the liberty she craves, or will she be damned to perpetual servitude or death?

MEANING #2: The Vampire Dominion is the dominant ruling power in the world hidden behind a wall of secrecy maintained by the Shadowstone organisation. The agency of real power within this world is subtle indeed.

MEANING #3: Anton Slayne, the hero/main-character of this story is the agent/agency of Chloe Armitage's subtle plan. Will he discover that he is her cat's paw in time to subvert her plan, or not? Will Chloe's cultivation of Anton's powers produce a weapon that rebounds upon its creator, or not?
