This book (and I confess I have only watched the TV interpretation) sounds very like a vanilla version of Robert Musil's Toerless. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't judge Tallis's book by the TV adaptation, though. The book is considerably less vanilla and more grim/unsettling than the TV version of the same case. (less)
