Maggie simply takes her place as homemaker and the family moves on until Rose comes.

It is indicative of the general violence and misogyny of Moran. It also illustrates the tight control he holds over his family at Great Meadow. It is a tool of abuse and control, much like the beatings and nightly rosaries. (less)
