The main characters—the ones who survive—remain from book to book and we get to see their stories/character growth continue. (Though readers are also introduced to new supporting characters in each book since the settings change. SJTR is set in London, HPD is in Romania, and book three is another location that’s a secret for now ;) (less)

Book one could be a standalone, the rest of the series doesn’t really add to the original plot or advance any of the romance. So technically you could read just this one.
