Patty I think this refers to a "vertical duplex". The shop is on the first two floors and the apartment is located above the shop. So there is effectively o…moreI think this refers to a "vertical duplex". The shop is on the first two floors and the apartment is located above the shop. So there is effectively only one living area above the shop. The apartment does have its own entrance from the back garden as well as a private staircase from the second floor of the coffee shop. Instead of the two areas being side-by-side, they are one on top of the other.(less)

I was only f…moreThis bothered me too, so I looked it up. In NYC, a duplex apartment means it's one apartment on two floors, rather than all on one floor. I was only familiar with the same definition as you, two dwellings in one building with separate entrances. I was confused when they were in the apartment and mentioned Mattel sleeping upstairs. It must be a 4 story building, two for the coffee shop and two for the apartment. (less)
