The hero is with a woman after he meets the heroine, but at that point, the hero hasn't made any plans to see the heroine again. The hero and heroine have a chance meeting one night, they run into each other the next morning, and then part ways. He lives in Denver, and she lives on the opposite side of Colorado - five hours away - so the thought to perhaps pursue something with her doesn't even cross his mind.

I will confess, when I read the part where he has a one-night-stand with a woman he met at a bar, I was very disappointed. But I kept reading, and I'm so glad I did because First Step Forward ended up being one of my favorite books I've read this year. Reflecting on that part of the story when I was finished, I felt like it showed character development. Did I wish he hadn't done it? Yes. But he was a great character the rest of the book, so I didn't hold it against him for too long.
