I've tried several times to put my character development process into words, and it always gets summed up as "I follow the lead the characters give me."

I can say that Veed was born of necessity (I needed a pre-demon-infestation antagonistic aspect in Nes's life), and that upon first discovering him, he wasn't nearly the beast he ended up being. I try to follow the organic flow of a story when I write and try to let the characters express themselves as individuals. Brant was actually the first character that got away with this when he started flinging profanity around. Veed took advantage of a similar lapse of my judgment.

Once I see what direction my characters try to go, I like to push them to extremes. Veed said he wanted to walk a shady path, so I shoved him and he (for better or worse) just chuckled and kept himself one step ahead of me. He really wrote himself.(less)
